Neu-Ulm: Church choir is looking for singing friends for a powerful Easter concert!
A lot is happening musically in Neu-Ulm! Dominik Herkommer, the region's committed Catholic cantor, has big plans to promote community through music. As the Augsburger Allgemeine reports, he will launch new projects that will also appeal to those who don't have time for choir rehearsals on a regular basis. This sounds like a great opportunity for all music-loving singers!
From January 22nd, the first rehearsal will start at 8 p.m. in the hall of the Johanneshaus. Other locations are already being planned. Herkommer plans to implement two to three projects every year. In addition, the church choir of St. Johann Baptist is renamed and now belongs to the Neu-Ulm parish community. The first joint project will take place on Good Friday, April 3rd, and Easter Sunday, April 5th, in Neu-Ulm and Pfuhl.
A musical highlight
The program includes “Missa brevis” by Christopher Tambling. Composed in 2013, this mass in B major combines musical depth and spirituality with its six movements. The world premiere in 2014, which brought together around 1,400 singers in St. Maria in Landau, already demonstrated the imposing size and expressiveness of the work. The entire structure consists of:
| Sentence | tempo |
|---|---|
| Kyrie | Moderato |
| Gloria | Con spirit |
| Creed | Moderato |
| Sanctus | Giocoso |
| Benedictus | Andante moderato |
| Agnus Dei | Moderato molto |
This mass, whose texts are written in Latin, inspires and touches. The partial instrumentation with optional brass and tubular bells gives it additional charm. Christopher Tambling himself was an accomplished music director who spent his career living in a Benedictine abbey. Colin Mawby, another highlight of the program, also enriched the musical landscape until his death in 2019.
Music as a counterpoint
Music also has a far-reaching significance for the community. As the eEducation shows, choral singing not only promotes musical skills, but also strengthens coexistence in society. Programs like “Music for Everyone!” support children and young people from difficult backgrounds and enable access to musical education.
Singing in a choir has proven positive effects on emotional and social development. Especially for those who are often not heard in society, the choir offers a platform to express themselves and grow. It is all the more important that many people have the opportunity to support and take part in such projects.
In Neu-Ulm, a space is being created that meaningfully combines creativity and community. Herkommer cordially invites anyone interested to become part of this musical journey. There is a lot of potential in this initiative, and who knows, perhaps you will soon be able to hear the sounds of the “Missa brevis” in the towns and villages of the region!
