Things will be exciting in Munich this weekend, as the Bavarian capital is hosting the Basketball Supercup for the first time. On August 15th, four teams will compete against each other in the SAP Garden: the German world champion team, Serbia, Turkey and the Czech Republic. This tournament is not only a sporting highlight, but also an important dress rehearsal for the upcoming European Championships, which starts in just eleven days. Among the German stars who use the time in training to prepare optimally is captain Dennis Schröder. He praises his teammate and rookie Franz Wagner for his impressive play and influence on the team. The two have already worked well together in recent games, such as the recent triumph against Slovenia with 80:70. The South German emphasizes that the German team, despite an imperfect game, “snatched away” the victory and developed further – a good sign for the European Championship.
The path to success
The German basketball team has achieved great things in recent years. After winning the European Championship bronze medal three years ago and the world championship title two years ago, the players are now building on these successes. New coach Alex Mumbru has taken on the challenge of establishing a faster and more aggressive style of play in order to improve the team even further. The team has already proven it can compete with stars like Schröder and Wagner, and the NBA players bring an extra dimension to the game.
However, there are also challenges ahead. With 15 players in the squad, three still have to go before the final selection of the twelve eligible to travel to the European Championship can be made.
