Mega concerts 2026: Königsplatz becomes Munich's music stage!
The Königsplatz in Munich is preparing for an exciting future and will be the new hotspot for top-class concerts from 2026. As the Mercury reports, in future years without an International Motor Show (IAA), the square will be used for a total of four weekends with two event days each. In the initial phase, in 2026, there will be three weekends, with the possibility of integrating two additional concerts.
The potential artists who are particularly hotly traded are Apache 207 and Paul Kalkbrenner, who could each boast two concerts in Munich. The internationally acclaimed musician Nick Cave is also considering playing in the Bavarian capital again after last appearing in the Olympiahalle in October 2024. However, concrete confirmation from the Munich District Administration Department (KVR) is still pending, as this information is considered confidential.
Popular event location and divided opinions
Over the years, Königsplatz has developed into a popular location for open-air events. In addition to numerous concerts, open-air cinema screenings and sporting events such as the bouldering and beach volleyball competitions at the European Championships 2022 will also take place here. As the Evening newspaper describes, artists such as Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Def Leppard, the Fantastischen Vier and Billy Idol have already taken the stage at Königsplatz.
But the topic of major events in this central square is polarizing. Residents and employees of the art area express their desire for a reduction in events, while event organizers support more frequent use. SPD city councilor Lena Odell applauded the compromise in the city council and stated that the usage conflicts had been carefully considered.
More planning security for organizers
A new fundamental decision that will apply for the next “20 years plus” has already been made. This not only means more events, but also early planning. The deadline for submitting applications is brought forward to December 31st of the previous year in order to ensure organizers better planning security. From December 1st, the KVR will also publish on the Internet which weekends are available for concerts at Königsplatz two years in advance.
The Munich district administration department states that organizers can only be considered for one weekend at a time, which simplifies the organization considerably. With these changes, Königsplatz will not only be further strengthened as Munich's cultural center, but will also be established as an attractive attraction for music lovers from the entire region.
