Munich Airport: Autonomous wheelchairs improve mobility for travelers!
Something is happening at Munich Airport! From now on, more precisely since August 2025, Munich Airport and Lufthansa are testing two modern, autonomous wheelchairs from the manufacturer WHILL. The project aims to significantly improve service for flying passengers with reduced mobility while optimizing processes at this busy location. Serving people with mobility issues has often been a challenge, but these innovative wheelchairs could make a real difference.
The test operation takes place in the satellite building of Terminal 2, on level 04. The pilot project is carried out by the Terminal 2 Company, a joint venture between FMG and Lufthansa, as well as Aicher Airport Services. Travelers who would like to use the service can register with Lufthansa to benefit from this free mobility service.
How do the new wheelchairs work?
But what is so special about these wheelchairs? The operating concept is extremely simple: passengers with limited mobility are accompanied to the wheelchair issuing point by Aicher Airport Services staff. There they select their destination, such as the departure gate, using an intuitive display, and the wheelchair sets off independently. Sophisticated sensor technology ensures that collisions are avoided and journeys are carried out safely. After arriving at the destination, the wheelchair automatically returns to its starting point.
The technical details are impressive: With a maximum speed of 3.5 km/h and a battery life of around seven hours, the wheelchairs can be used without any problems. They have enough space for up to ten kilograms of luggage and are equipped with a seat belt and an emergency button. These features are not only important for safety, they also promote the independence of passengers.
Responding to increasing demand
This pilot project responds to the increasing demand for mobility aids at Munich Airport. The aim is to relieve the burden on the mobility service and at the same time promote the independence of travelers. In the long term, fully autonomous use of wheelchairs is even being considered, which would be an exciting step towards smart technologies in travel.
Overall, it shows that Munich Airport and Lufthansa have a good hand when it comes to making everyday travel more pleasant for all passengers. Further information about the Mobility Service and barrier-free travel is available online so that interested travelers can find out more in advance.
