Attention, Miltenberg! Pensioner falls victim to a fake police officer
On Wednesday afternoon, a pensioner in Miltenberg became the victim of a brazen attempt at fraud. According to main-echo.de, the elderly lady received a call from someone pretending to be a police officer. He warned her about a break-in in the neighborhood and mentioned her address as a possible target. Arguing that her safety was at risk, the fraudster managed to persuade the pensioner to hand over cash and coins to someone collecting them.
At around 2:00 p.m. the lady handed the money over to the person collecting it, who then fled to Horstigstrasse. The police are now looking for witnesses who can provide information about the perpetrator. Descriptions show a man about 1.80 meters tall, around 35 years old, strong with a three-day beard, noticeable by a mark on his cheek and tattoos on both arms. The person who picked up the car was wearing a black T-shirt and black trousers.
Police prevention measures
Older people in particular often hear about such scams. The Lower Franconia Police Headquarters has therefore launched the prevention campaign “Leg’auf!” was launched to inform this target group about common tricks. Another initiative, “I protect Grandma and Grandpa”, was launched in schools in July 2022 to raise awareness of this issue among younger people.
A central aim of these campaigns is to encourage the population to show distrust: “Hang up and call the emergency number 110 yourself,” is the police recommendation. After all, real police officers never ask you to hand over money or jewelry, and phone numbers are often spoofed so that the real police do not appear with the number 110.
More incidents in the region
On the same day, a money box containing around 600 euros was stolen from an ice cream parlor in Obernburg. The prosecution is concentrating on two perpetrators. The man is described as strong and with a full beard, wearing a white T-shirt, white shorts and a blue cap. The perpetrator is around 50 years old and is also strong, wearing a white blouse and pink jeans.
There was also a traffic accident in Niedernberg in which a 40-year-old fled. He was later found sleeping in his apartment after a witness reported fresh evidence of an accident. A breath alcohol test showed 1.2 per mille, and the man confessed to driving. He now faces various legal consequences, including endangering road traffic.
Citizens are called upon to walk the streets more carefully. A search is currently underway in Miltenberg for an unknown person who hit a parked Toyota and left a false cell phone number. Furthermore, a Ford was hit in the Norma parking lot in Bürgstadt. Anyone who is connected to this should please contact the Miltenberg police station on 09371/945-0.
