Miesbach opts for green electricity: a step towards sustainability!
The city of Miesbach is moving into the next round of electricity procurement and has decided to take part in a bundled tender. With this measure, the municipality not only wants to optimize costs, but also increase the purchase of green electricity. Last year, the tender at Eins-Energie Sachsen was not very encouraging with overpriced tariffs, which has now led to a rethink. How Mercury reported, the next auction will be organized by Enportal GmbH.
The decision to participate was made in February 2025, during which the city councilors discussed various tariff options. The selection ranges from a gray electricity mix to various types of green electricity: one variant without a new installation quota and one with this quota. The latter has additional costs of around 1 cent per kWh, while the variant without a quota is around 0.2 cent more expensive. With an electricity consumption of two million kWh, these differences add up to noticeable additional costs of around 4,000 euros and 20,000 euros.
Strong voices for green electricity
Mayor Gerhard Braunmiller from the CSU sees the timing of the tender as good and supports the green electricity initiative. Third Mayor Franz Mayer suggests extending the contract term to three years in order to keep a close eye on market conditions. Astrid Güldner, the second mayor from the Greens, is also in favor of purchasing green electricity in order to promote local energy production. Paul Fertl from the SPD, on the other hand, advocates a two-year contract and a clear focus on clean electricity without subsidies.
The decision was ultimately made with five votes against for green electricity without a quota for new installations, which shows a clear direction. In a non-public meeting, a three-year contract was also voted unanimously. The city administration is now tasked with forwarding the necessary information to Enportal in a timely manner.
Green electricity within the legal framework
An important aspect that always resonates in the background is the legal basis for the procurement of green electricity. Public clients are obliged to procure this through transparent competitive tendering procedures. Loud Federal Environment Agency, legal requirements are secured by guarantees of origin and electricity labeling in order to exclude double marketing. The federal government's goal is to be climate neutral by 2030 and to increase demand for renewable energies.
The importance of #greenelectricity continues to be supported by current developments. The city of Miesbach is not only doing good business in terms of costs, but is also showing responsibility towards the environment and the future.
