On Monday night, a violent storm hit Bavaria, affecting many districts. Heavy rain, thunderstorms and squalls caused numerous police and fire service operations, but fortunately there were no significant injuries South German newspaper reported. In Upper Bavaria, emergency services raised the alarm around 20 times because of fallen trees and minor flooding.

The Passau and Landshut region in Lower Bavaria were particularly affected, where emergency services had to be deployed 24 times to clear floods and fallen branches. In Upper Franconia, too, the situation defused after initial problems on Sunday afternoon. As a result, the night there was largely unproblematic.

Overview of the storm situation

The storm front was a result of the sudden summer in Bavaria, which brought temperatures of up to 35 degrees at the weekend. The first showers and thunderstorms were registered on Saturday, before a strong thunderstorm front moved across eastern Bavaria and the foothills of the Alps on Sunday afternoon. The Augsburger Allgemeine highlights that the police in Upper Franconia had to count around 20 weather-related operations in just two hours. These often involved uprooted trees and small road washouts.

In Helmbrechts, Hof district, a supermarket was flooded, putting several fire departments on alert. While other regions in Germany such as Saxony and Thuringia had greater problems with the storms, the greater damage in Bavaria remained manageable. Nevertheless, the warning is German Weather Service should be taken seriously, even if most warnings in Bavaria were only active temporarily.

Outlook on the weather situation

Bavaria can breathe a sigh of relief for the coming week: after the storm, mostly friendlier weather is expected on Monday. Only in some places there could be more heavy rain while the sun shines through from the northwest. With maximum temperatures between 18 degrees on Lake Chiemsee and up to 25 degrees in Mainfranken, the signs point to spring for the next few days.

Lots of sunshine with some clouds are in the forecast from Tuesday to Thursday. The highs at the start of the week will be between 23 and 28 degrees, although the 30 degree mark could even be within reach on Wednesday. However, it can get rainy again on Thursday in the south of the Franconian Alb and the Bavarian Forest, while the rest of the Free State can enjoy bright weather.

Citizens are asked to keep an eye on the weather situation and always pay attention to possible warnings, despite the approaching better weather. With a little luck, summer in Frankfurt could provide relaxing days.
