European Day of Jewish Culture: Insights into Memmingen's history!

The European Day of Jewish Culture will take place in Memmingen on September 7, 2025. This important event is organized by the Memmingen City Museum and the Tourism Office and invites everyone interested to learn more about Jewish heritage from 11 a.m. to around 1 p.m. Under the motto “People of the book” the focus is on making Jewish history, art, religion and culture visible. On this day, the city museum will offer various presentations on research and provenance that will encourage visitors to think.

A highlight of the day will be the presentation of the first audio guide route, which was created as part of the “VerVolkt” exhibition series. This route leads to authentic places of Jewish life in Memmingen and sheds light on the dramatic fate of Jewish citizens during the Nazi era. This not only addresses the past, but also promotes a conscious approach to history.

The second audio guide route

Another exciting audio guide route is entitled “Cheese, Rind and Ross” and is part of the “Butter–Cattle–Destruction” project funded by the European Network of Remembrance. This route addresses the role of agriculture in Memmingen during the Nazi era and addresses the fate of city farmers as well as livestock and cheese traders. Critical reflection on one's own history is also in the foreground here.

Come to the city museum and find out about the ongoing work on provenance research and the new department “Jewish Life in Memmingen”. The aim of this event is to keep the memory of Jewish life in Memmingen alive and to stimulate reflection. Participation in this special event is free and open to anyone interested in Jewish culture and history.
