Successful conclusion: Summer holiday reading club inspires 544 children!

At the Memmingen City Library, an exciting chapter of this year's summer holiday reading club is behind us, which was celebrated with a big raffle. From July 29th to September 24th, 2025, 544 children, mainly of primary school age, took part in the campaign, further revitalizing the already lively reading culture in our city. As the city of Memmingen reports, the initiative represents a real ray of hope in promoting the love of reading among the youngest and encouraging them to read.

The reading club, which took place for the fifth time this year, was an invitation to all interested children to discover their joy in books, manga or comics. There was a stamp for each work read, and anyone who managed to collect three or more stamps could look forward to a certificate and a voucher for two scoops of ice cream. The children's commitment was impressive and helps to increase enthusiasm for literature.

The big wins

The culmination of the campaign was the raffle of four major prizes among the participants. The lucky winners can look forward to exciting experiences:

  • 1. Platz: Besuch in der DAV Boulder/Kletterhalle Memmingen
  • 2. Platz: Besuch im Jungen Landestheater Schwaben
  • 3. Platz: Besuch im Memminger Marionettentheater
  • 4. Platz: Büchergutschein der Buchhandlung Schmid im Wert von 10 Euro

The reading caterpillar – creative and lively

But the focus is not just on reading. A creative campaign accompanied the summer holiday reading club: the “Leseraupe”. Since the beginning of the summer holidays, a colorful caterpillar has been growing in the city library, made out of children's creatively designed paper plates. Over 140 plates have been returned so far, and the caterpillar extends from the front door on the ground floor to the youth department on the first floor. The response is overwhelming and shows how well the idea was accepted.

A total of over 540 children took part in the reading caterpillar campaign, which is an increase compared to the almost 400 registrations last year. On average in Bavaria, the number of active participants is just 94, so Memmingen stands out clearly and sets an example for the promotion of reading in the region.

The aim of the campaign is to support the joy of reading and discovering new stories. The younger siblings of the reading club participants were also able to enjoy the “reading caterpillar,” which can still be admired in the library, and so the work of art will remain even after the campaign ends.

To get more information about previous campaigns and future projects, it is worth taking a look at the Memmingen City Library websites City of Memmingen and New Facts. This summer vacation reading club is a wonderful example of how community and creativity work hand in hand to raise the next generation of bookworms.
