Change at the top: SPD Zellingen elects new chairman!
In Zellingen there has been a change in leadership at the SPD local association. On this momentous day, June 16, 2025, Werner Küffner was unanimously elected as the new chairman Main post reported. Matthias Günter continues to support him as deputy chairman. The new elections also brought Paul Küffner, Christopher Amthor and Benedikt Kurz into the team as assessors. Michael Albert takes over the cashier position and Jürgen Keller acts as secretary.
During the meeting, the previous chairman Jürgen Keller looked back on his more than ten years in office. In his annual report, he recalled the local association's 100th anniversary in 2018. Under Keller's leadership, the SPD emerged as the second strongest faction in the local council in the 2020 local elections. Nevertheless, due to the current membership levels, the local association is concerned about difficulties in retaining all members spd-zellingen.de notes.
Traditional forest festival and social cohesion
A highlight in the Zellinger SPD calendar is the forest festival, which is always celebrated on Father's Day and has become an integral part of social life in the region. This year the festival took place under brilliant weather, which further lifted the mood. This shows how important the SPD is for coexistence in Zellingen.
During his speech, Küffner left no doubt that the local association's main tasks include working for children, young people, families and seniors. The revitalization of youth work in the community is particularly urgent. He also expressed criticism of the permanent closure of the youth center (Juz) and called for urgently needed lunch and holiday care for the children.
Prospects and challenges for the future
In her speech, district chairwoman Pamela Nembach pointed out the difficult financial situation of the district budget. Despite significant investments in the central clinic, personnel planning in some departments of the Ministry of Health remains problematic. These challenges, which affect infrastructure and supply, are also likely to have an impact on the SPD in Zellingen.
Membership development within the SPD is a widespread topic. While the party had over a million members in its heyday, membership has fallen to 393,727 by 2021, a loss of over 58% since 1990, according to figures from the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
It remains to be seen what the realignment under Küffner and the planned activities in Zellingen will look like. The SPD has big plans to retain its members as well as win new ones and promote social cohesion.
