Premiere at Globe Coburg: Celebrate with the Comedian Harmonists!

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the musical play “The Comedian Harmonists” will celebrate its premiere at Globe Coburg. The production promises to bring the legendary group's moving story to the stage. The action takes place in Berlin in 1927 and follows founder Harry Frommermann, who is looking for a German counterpart to the US a cappella group “The Revelers”. After over 70 audited singers, the sextet was formed, which later achieved great fame for songs such as “A friend, a good friend” and “Weekend and Sunshine”.

“The Comedian Harmonists” were founded on December 18, 1927, and the group's beginnings are closely linked to Harry Frommermann's apartment in Berlin-Friedenau. The first rehearsal took place in January 1928 and the group was quickly on the way to fame, even if they faced difficulties at the beginning. The group made its first appearance on September 1, 1928 in the revue operetta “Casanova,” followed by a series of further successes that ultimately led to nationwide fame in 1930. Nevertheless, the Nazis' rise to power in 1933 represented a dramatic turning point that meant the end of the careers of the Jewish members of the Harmonists. From 1934 onwards they were banned from concerts, which ultimately led to the group's breakup.

The production and the ensemble

The spectacular piece is based on the book by Gottfried Greiffenhagen, with a musical score by Franz Wittenbrink. Directed by Dirk Mestmacher, who is also on stage himself, and co-directed by Matthias Straub, the ensemble is musically directed by Frank Sodemann.

The ensemble consists of: Dirk Mestmacher, Tobias Bode, Jonas Hämmerle, Benjamin Hübner, Nils Liebscher and Stephan Mertl. The choreography and stage design of the piece, which is deliberately kept simple, were designed by Till Kuhnert and are intended to create an intimate atmosphere that emphasizes the closeness to the audience.

Premiere and ticket information

The premiere will take place directly at the Globe Coburg, and demand for tickets is already high. There are currently only a few tickets available for this season's performances, raising concerns that the performance will sell out quickly. Tickets can be purchased at the theater box office, ticket offices and online via the Landestheater Coburg website.

For everyone who cannot be there for this great production: “The Comedian Harmonists” will be performed again in the 2025/26 season, providing further opportunities to immerse yourself in the world of this extraordinary ensemble.

The story of the Comedian Harmonists is not only one that makes you laugh, but also makes you think. A piece of German cultural history that is sure to captivate the audience given the ups and downs the group has experienced. For all music and history lovers, this is an event not to be missed.
