Günzburg is preparing for crises: security for all citizens!

In the city of Günzburg, the topic of crisis management is very important. Mayor Gerhard Jauernig has commissioned the city administration to expand modern crisis team structures in order to ensure future security as a service provider in essential areas of life. This decision was recently addressed at a city council meeting held Monday evening. A working group will be formed that will meet for the first time in 2023 to develop targeted measures and possibly integrate additional city council colleagues in the coming year.

“We have to remain able to act in order to ensure local public services in the long term,” emphasizes Jauernig. The important areas that are in focus include drinking water supply, IT security and dealing with crisis scenarios such as blackouts or attacks on critical infrastructure. Emergency plans for blackouts and information channels for quick communication with the population already exist.

Comprehensive crisis management

The goal is clear: In an emergency, the city wants to ensure that both the water supply and wastewater disposal can be maintained. The municipal utilities play a central role here, as they also supply neighboring communities with drinking water. The planning also involves important players such as fire departments, police as well as the district administration and the technical relief agency. Private aid organizations such as the German Red Cross and Johanniter should also be integrated into crisis management. Further cooperation with institutions such as the Bavarian Red Cross, the DLRG and even the Bundeswehr are also conceivable.

Jauernig highlights the responsibility that comes with solid crisis management and aims to provide security, orientation and cohesion in crisis situations.

Current developments in crisis management

In Germany, the basis for effective crisis management is continually being developed. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) attaches great importance to the evaluation of real damage events and the initiation of research projects. Crisis management procedures are to be optimized through constant professional exchange and the development of concepts and guidelines. The BBK offers helpful services for authorities to support them in their internal crisis management.

A striking example of this networking is the LÜKEX exercise series, which gives countries and departments the opportunity to exchange information and improve crisis management strategies in a realistic environment. Now more than ever, well thought-out crisis management requires a strong network of state and private actors, as the BBK states. Only through close cooperation can we react quickly and effectively in crisis situations.

In summary, it can be said that Günzburg is prepared for the challenges of the future. With the new plans and a clear crisis management strategy, not only will municipal services be secured, but the community will also be strengthened. In this way, the city remains a safe haven for its citizens in uncertain times.
