There have been worrying reports of the emergence of the avian influenza virus in the Fürstenfeldbruck district South German newspaper known. After detection of a dead duck at Lake Olching and a dead greylag goose at Lake Germering, the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) has confirmed that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is widespread in the region. Similar cases had already occurred in neighboring districts, which made the situation even more tense.
The affected wild birds that can transmit the virus are a gray goose and a mallard. The district office appeals to all poultry farmers to strictly adhere to operational hygiene measures. You should also keep a close eye on your animals and consult a veterinarian immediately if you notice any abnormalities.
Increased risk in Austria
In the past, large poultry farms, especially in the Amstetten district (Lower Austria), suffered from massive outbreaks in autumn 2024, which led to the temporary establishment of protection and surveillance zones. There are currently no known outbreaks in poultry farms in Austria, but the authorities remain vigilant. Mind you, a vaccine against this dangerous disease is not available in Austria or the EU.
Prevention measures and recommendations
To protect domestic stocks, poultry farmers should consider some special measures. It is therefore essential to avoid contact between domestic poultry and wild birds and to maintain biosecurity measures accordingly. This also includes reporting dead birds and suspected cases to the responsible district administrative authorities.
Poultry farmers are required to report every keeping of poultry (one animal or more) within one week. Strict official measures are also taken in the event of outbreaks, ranging from shutdowns and culling to special cleaning regulations.
