Spectacular fire drill after an accident during an illegal car race!

On July 8, 2025, an impressive joint exercise in the area of technical assistance (THL) took place in Freyung. In a realistic scenario, the emergency services simulated an illegal car race in the former Bundeswehr “Mun camp” in which two vehicles collided. The exercise scenario appealed to all the senses and presented the specialists with major challenges.

During the exercise, one of the vehicles involved in the accident was lying on its side while the other was on its roof. Thanks to a well-organized deployment, the Freyung platoon commanders had set up a specific room outside the camp in order to optimally coordinate the emergency services. The first rescue units from Freyung and Philippsreut quickly arrived with hydraulic rescue equipment. The emergency services also included sniffer dogs that were used to search for people.

Efficient coordination and deployment technology

In order to optimize rescue and supply operations, a one-way street system was implemented. A section leader coordinated the patient rescue, in close coordination with the rescue service and the district fire brigade doctor Peter Gahbauer. Another exciting moment was when the incident commander found an abandoned vehicle in the ditch and suspected three people were injured.

The Kreuzberg fire department quickly came to help and secured the vehicle. The Bavarian Forest Rescue Dog Squadron was called in to support the clearance work. Their seven area detection dogs were finally able to locate a person in a bunker in danger of collapsing. The Technical Relief Agency (THW) Passau helped by removing a large block of stone that was blocking the exit and securing the bunker.

Successful conclusion and important insights

After intensive and committed effort, the exercise was successfully completed. The fire brigade, BRK, the Stadler rescue service, the THW Passau and the Bavarian Forest rescue dog team were represented in a total of 105 emergency services. A total of 22 vehicles and area detection dogs were used, with seven “injured people”, represented by the youth fire brigade and puppets, being rescued.

The event clearly illustrated the need for joint exercises in order to be optimally prepared in an emergency. Such exercises are not only important for cooperation, but also for the further development of operational techniques and strategies - a cornerstone of complete threat prevention.

We would like to thank everyone involved for their tireless efforts and are already looking forward to the next exercise, which will certainly bring many valuable insights! Further information on the organization of the fire departments can also be found at the Berlin Fire Department.
