Autumnal creativity: Children create wind chimes in the Erlangen castle garden

The anticipation of autumn is rising in the Erlangen castle gardens. As thick fog envelops the scene, the foliage turns bright shades of yellow. A suitable ambience for the creative activity that the team of educators from the children and youth clinic of the Erlangen University Hospital organized in the foyer. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Joachim Wölfle created a special program on the topic of “wind”, which focuses primarily on patients and siblings. All children who were fit enough to make their way to the foyer were welcome to take part and live out their imagination.

Under the motto “Design with Wind”, the young participants were not only able to make creative wind chimes, but also discover the latest children's books that tell exciting stories about kites, wind and the autumnal season. In addition, freshly prepared popcorn from a popcorn machine provided an extra portion of fun and a little refreshment during the program.

A special commitment

Not to be overlooked is the support of the “Toy Run – Dreams for Sick Children Erlangen” association, which supports the program financially. The “Toy Run” has an eventful history that began in 1995 when 50 Americans rode their Harley Davidsons through Erlangen to donate toys and money to the children's hospital. Over the years, this campaign has developed into a permanent fixture in Erlangen's event calendar.

In 2001, after the death of the initiator Jay Glasgow, the association “Toy Run – Dreams for Sick Children Erlangen e.V.” founded to support people in need, especially in the children's clinic. From the initial 50 motorcycles, the number of participants has now increased to over 1,200 machines. Every year the bikers ride from Heusteg to Dechsendorfer Weiher and back, while hundreds of spectators line the route and more than 1,000 people in the children's clinic share in the joy.

Closeness to the people and support

The success of such actions shows how much cohesion and solidarity are valued in the Erlangen community. But the Erlanger Children's Hospital faces many challenges: medical, personnel and financial hurdles must be overcome every day. That's why support associations such as the Children's Hospital Amsterdamer Straße Cologne e.V. also ask for support. The donations not only enable the purchase of new equipment, but also support innovative forms of therapy and special projects such as clinic clowns and the “No Isolation” project.
