HC Erlangen: Staying in the league secured with new additions and a win!

HC Erlangen has done it! With an impressive 25:21 win against HSG Wetzlar, the Erlangen handball players secured relegation in the Daikin Handball Bundesliga. “It was a hard road, but we learned the necessary lessons,” says coach Carsten Bissel. His team was under a lot of pressure in the first half of the season when they were in second-to-last place with 5:27 points. But the belief in staying in the league was unbroken, as Bissel optimistically emphasized at the end of December.

The second half of the season brought the necessary improvement. With a greatly improved defensive performance and the signing of four new winter signings, the team has once again developed its potential. Dario Quenstedt from TSV Hannover-Burgdorf takes on the goalkeeper position, joined by Finn Zecher, Viggo Kristjansson and Milos Kos. Kristjansson in particular demonstrated his class with 96 goals scored and 52 assists in just 13 games and quickly became a top performer.

New additions and restructuring

Another big change is imminent: Klemen Ferlin, the Slovenian national goalkeeper, is leaving HC Erlangen after four and a half years and moving to Industria Kielce. Managing director René Selke expresses his gratitude for Ferlin's tireless efforts, but emphasizes that the goalkeeping statistics were inadequate and a change seemed inevitable. With Dario Quenstedt they now hope to create more stability in the defense from now on.

The winter newcomers are not only intended to strengthen the team in the short term. Bissel is already planning for next season. He would like to promote the integration of talent from the A-youth and sign another backcourt player. “This is essential if we want to achieve our goals,” said Bissel resolutely. The performance of the newcomers, especially Quenstedt with 14 saves in the decisive game, makes those responsible optimistic.

Outlook for next season

However, the challenges do not remain. Despite the positive development, HC Erlangen is currently still in the bottom of the table, with a current score of 2:20. Fans can still look forward to exciting games and a strong team that will continue to come together and grow. “We now have the chance to learn from our mistakes and do better,” concludes Bissel, giving both his team and the fans hope for a successful future.
