Flood of e-scooter accidents in Herzogenaurach: injured again after red light!
In recent weeks there have been a number of incidents in the Eckental and Herzogenaurach region that attracted the attention of the police. Deliberate damage to vehicles and a dangerous traffic accident made headlines.
In Eckental, a 64-year-old German man repeatedly reported intentional damage to his vehicle tires on Eschenauer Hauptstrasse. In the last three months, the total damage amounts to around 500 euros. Fortunately, the injured party noticed the damage before starting his journey, so there was no danger. The Erlangen-Land police station is accepting information to help clarify these crimes on 09131/98842-14.
Incident in Herzogenaurach
In Herzogenaurach there was a traffic stop on Friday night during which drug-typical symptoms were found in a 42-year-old e-scooter driver. A drug test confirmed the suspicion, so the driver was banned from driving. A blood sample was later taken at the St. Anna district hospital in Höchstadt.
Meanwhile, there was a serious accident in the afternoon involving a 43-year-old Bulgarian car driver. She ignored the red light at the intersection of Hans-Ort-Ring / Nürnberger Straße and collided with the vehicle of a 58-year-old German driver when turning left. The car that caused the accident caught fire and had to be extinguished by the Herzogenaurach fire department. Both drivers suffered minor injuries, while the total damage is estimated at around 35,000 euros.
The e-scooter situation
The incidents shed light on the increasingly critical situation with e-scooters on the road. E-scooters are very popular, but the accident statistics speak for themselves. According to data destatis.de, the number of e-scooter accidents resulting in personal injury increased by 14.1 percent to 9,425 in 2023, causing the number of deaths to double from 11 to 22. Young people are particularly affected: 41.6 percent of injured e-scooter riders were under 25 years old.
In order to increase safety on the roads, the legislature is planning some adjustments that will affect the use of e-scooters. In the future, they should be allowed to drive primarily where cycling is permitted. E-scooter drivers do not need a driver's license and must be at least 14 years old. In addition, the same alcohol limit values apply to them as to drivers, although if the blood alcohol concentration exceeds 0.5 per mille, there is a risk of severe penalties, including fines and driving bans adac.de.
Although e-scooters are a practical solution for many, responsible use and compliance with the rules must be urgently promoted. The planned introduction of indicators and better braking devices is intended to ensure safer operation in the future.
