Advent concert in the cathedral: enchanting organ sounds and candlelight!
Advent atmosphere in Eichstätter Cathedral: On Wednesday, December 3rd, it will shine in festive candlelight. From 5 p.m., the cathedral invites you to a special “candlelight concert,” which is all about the pre-Christmas season. The two artists Maria Blahutova, a talented soprano, and Jan Blahuta, regional cantor from Neumarkt, will enchant visitors with baroque and romantic works for soprano and organ. The diocese of Eichstätt reports on a varied program that includes, among other things, pieces by famous composers such as Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
A highlight of the evening will be the organ improvisation on the well-known Advent song “Maria went through a thorn forest” by Jan Blahuta. This song has an exciting story: It comes from an unknown author and was first published in 1850. Originally known as an oral pilgrimage song in the Catholic Eichsfeld in the 19th century, it tells of Mary's visit to Elisabeth and symbolically uses the dead thorn forest that blooms as Mary passes by with Jesus. So the song has not only melodic meaning, but also deeper mystical meaning, which is reflected in its lyrics, as shown by the recurring phrase “Kyrie eleison”. Wikipedia explains that the melody and the coherent lyrics have been able to regain popularity in the Catholic youth movement in recent years through various songbooks.
An evening full of music and spiritual impulses
The event lasts around 45 minutes, during which visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a contemplative atmosphere - surrounded by music, texts and candlelight. Cathedral Chapter Michael Harrer from the Eichstätt parish will provide spiritual impulses. It is particularly worth mentioning that admission to this special concert is free and only voluntary donations are requested. Admission opens at 4:30 p.m., so there is enough time to prepare for the evening and enjoy the special ambience.
The interplay of festive music and a contemplative atmosphere offers the ideal opportunity to relax during the hectic Advent season and to experience the anticipation of the upcoming Christmas. Don't miss out on being part of this special evening in Eichstätter Cathedral and enjoying the sounds of unforgettable compositions.
For music lovers and Advent fans, there is no better way to get in the mood for the holidays than at a concert in a historical setting, where tradition and modern sound art combine harmoniously. We look forward to your coming!
