This weekend is organized by Matthäus Kamuf, the speaker for adult pastoral care, and Marion Bayerl, the head of the adult and family pastoral department. Families can look forward to a varied and educational program designed to encourage anticipation of Christmas.

The Advent weekend has a course fee of 125 euros for adults, which includes accommodation and meals. Participation for children is even free. Advent itself is a special time of preparation. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ushers in the new church year, which is important in both the Catholic and Protestant churches. The name “Advent” comes from the Latin “adventus,” which means “arrival.” In Western Christianity, this time of anticipation is a celebration of the birth of Jesus and the return of Christ. During this period, numerous customs and traditions are widespread that shorten the waiting time and emphasize the spiritual dimension. Wikipedia adds that this time is observed by many Christian denominations.

Customs and rituals

One of the best-known customs is the Advent wreath, which is traditionally woven from fir or spruce branches and decorated with four candles. Each light symbolizes an aspect of hope and life while waiting for the birth of Christ. This tradition was introduced in Germany in the 19th century and is also very popular here. Another custom is the atmospheric Rorate masses, which are celebrated in many parishes; These special Christmas services often take place at dusk and are surrounded by a special atmosphere. How Vatican News reports, the first Sunday of Advent will take place on December 1st, 2024 and will usher in the festive season.

In conclusion, it can be said that the upcoming family weekend in Advent offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the pre-Christmas season contemplatively and together. Take advantage of the opportunity and create unforgettable memories together with your family.
