River banks in the Donau-Ries district: save nature, revitalize waterways!

Something is happening in the area of nature conservation in the idyllic district of Donau-Ries: the “Optimization of bank edges” project aims to revitalize the region’s water edges. These banks are not only a habitat for numerous animal species, but also important water connections for flora and fauna, which require both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. lfu.bayern.de reports that the region covers over 1,800 km of water bodies that are often severely neglected.

The challenges are great: many banks are in poor ecological condition. In particular, straightening, construction and the use of fertilizers and pesticides have led to a dramatic decline in natural biodiversity. André Holzinger, project manager and “bach godfather” of the Retzenbach, is committed to tackling these problems. With a good hand, he has already looked after ten bodies of water in the district and tackled the first measures for revitalization. Care is taken to ensure that the bank strips are mown gently with a hand-held scythe so as not to unnecessarily disturb the habitat.

Renaturation and its significance

But what does renaturation actually mean? According to the Federal Environment Agency, renaturation measures are crucial for improving the condition of water bodies. Over 90% of German rivers are straightened or piped. The restoration of natural habitats could not only increase ecological diversity, but also the attractiveness of water bodies. umweltbundesamt.de explains that measures such as removing transverse structures or installing dead wood can significantly improve the condition of water bodies.

The first steps in Donau-Ries are already having an impact. Holzinger and his team conducted intensive coordination with local nature conservation authorities and fishing clubs. The public is also sensitized through water tours, lectures and press work in order to raise awareness of the need to protect water bodies.

A look into the future

The next phase of the project includes examining biotope connectivity options along the Retzenbach and Forellenbach. A comprehensive concept for the revitalization of the Arenbach is being developed here, which includes, among other things, flattening the banks and creating passages for aquatic life. The first successes are already visible, and it remains exciting to see how the ecological conditions can be further improved.

In addition, Donau-Ries is looking for additional “bach sponsors” who would like to look after the lease-free waters. A real opportunity for all nature lovers and environmentally conscious citizens. The project has been running since September 2024 and is funded by the government of Swabia. Anyone who has more information or is interested in getting involved can contact the government's Wieland Feuerabendt.

In order to promote a natural design of the bank edges, it is important that all those involved pull together. tegelkamp-tiefbau.de emphasizes that returning technically modified areas to a near-natural state is an essential step in bringing back the original flora and fauna.

We will be excited to see how these initiatives develop and what positive changes they will bring to our waters and biodiversity in the region.
