St. Nicholas Market in Harburg: Christmas magic for the whole family!
It's Christmassy in the tranquil town of Harburg on December 4th, 2025! The church service at the opening of the Advent season is a popular custom, and this year the “Self-made Christmas” event is at the top of the list of festive activities. From 11 a.m., visitors can explore over 50 stands that offer handmade gift ideas, loving decorations and creative handicrafts. In addition to building a lively market, there will also be a varied supporting program. Donau-Ries-Aktuell reports that nativity scene exhibitions and impressive barrel organ music accentuate the cityscape on this day.
A special highlight will be the visit of Santa Claus at 2:20 p.m., which will brighten up many children's eyes on the market square. After his arrival, Santa Claus will accompany the little ones to the city library in the Ströhlinhaus, where there will be an enchanting Santa Claus and picture book reading with Kristina Haus at 3 p.m. The afternoon will be accompanied by music from the Protestant trombone choir St. Barbara, who will perform festive melodies from 3 p.m.
Crafts and competitions
In the meantime, the commitment of the local artists will also be recognized: Ms. Theiler will show her handmade Christmas baubles, and the “Harburger Hefte” will be available for sale from 1 p.m. As part of the event, the Harburg Nativity Trail with over 50 stations in shop windows and various facilities in the old town offers a festive opportunity to explore the city. This great concept invites you to take part in a competition in which red letters in the crib windows produce a solution word. The entry forms are available in local banks and through official messengers; the deadline for entries for the competition is January 6, 2026.
Another exciting event is scheduled for the next day, December 6th: a large gingerbread house will be built on Harburg's town hall square, where children can express their creativity by decorating gingerbread plates. The Friends of Harburger Theater e.V. will also be present to arouse children and students' interest in the theater world. The Harburg Advent calendar for children will also be connected to the stage, and the city's tower brass players will bring their talent to bear at 6 p.m.
Christmas markets in Germany

European-Traveler points out that these markets not only offer festive goods, but also culinary delicacies such as mulled wine, children's punch and gingerbread. The markets in larger cities are particularly popular, while the smaller ones are often only open on certain weekends. Most Christmas markets offer a comprehensive program with live music and craft activities, so there is something for young and old.
A lot of things in the run-up to Christmas revolve around communal experiences and looking forward to the holiday. Whether strolling through the stalls, listening to festive sounds or making your own crafts - here everyone will find their place for reflection and joy!
