Lebenshilfe Donau-Ries: Big plans for schools and workshops!
At the general meeting of Lebenshilfe Donau-Ries in Wemding on December 8, 2025, a lot of work was done with an eye on the future. Hermann Faul, the former mayor of Nördlingen, remained on board as chairman of the supervisory board, while Karola Müller and the entire supervisory board were confirmed in their previous positions. This shows that continuity and experience are also very important in responsible work with people with disabilities. Barbara Sendlinger, Solidaris auditor, confirmed that the association was in a solid economic situation, which should certainly reassure the members.
However, it was announced with regret that long-standing CEO Günter Schwendner will be retiring at the end of the year. However, his successor has already been decided: Florian Straßer, who has been working as a special representative and authorized representative since October, will take over the helm in the future. Manfred Steger will take over Schwendner's responsibilities at the turn of the year, and Straßer will succeed Steger. This clearly shows that Lebenshilfe Donau-Ries ensures a smooth transition, which is very important in times of change.
Construction projects to support integration
But there is not only a lot going on behind the scenes, there are also huge structural plans. The Donau-Ries workshops in Nördlingen urgently need more space, and so a new workshop is being built to serve as alternative accommodation. The association's office will also find a new home here. Capacities are reaching their limits and it is high time for extensive construction projects. Among other things, the Hermann Keßler School, a central educational institution for people with disabilities, is being urgently expanded. A temporary container solution is currently being used, but this will soon be over!
In addition, Wohnheim GmbH is planning to build a new dormitory in Asbach-Bäumenheim, which will offer space for twelve residents. The existing residence, the “Alte Sigelvilla”, is no longer up to date and needs a refresh. These investments are a clear sign of further support and integration of people with disabilities in the region.
A clear course for the future
The decided investments and the confirmation of the supervisory board clearly show how serious Lebenshilfe Donau-Ries is about sustainably improving the quality of life and the opportunities of its protégés. The developments make it clear that there is a good hand for the needs of the people in the region and that the work will be continued with full vigor in the coming years.
In times when social institutions are often under pressure, it is all the more gratifying to see that Lebenshilfe Donau-Ries is setting a clear course for the future and thereby not only improving the quality of life of those affected, but also making a valuable contribution to society. Augsburger Allgemeine and Donau-Ries Current report on these positive developments that point to the need for support and integration of people with disabilities.
