On February 10, 2026, the Deggendorf University of Technology (THD) will be transformed into a place full of creativity and innovation. The 13th “Research Day” invites local companies and the interested public to experience a colorful program. From 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., young researchers and scientists will present their work in the form of science slams and informative posters. This event offers a platform to promote exchange between universities and business, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Dorner, who highlights the importance of such interactions. Not only should it be informative, but it should also be fun!
A highlight of the day will be the guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Christian Linsmeier from Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH. His topic “On the way to a fusion power plant” promises fascinating insights into the future of energy production. In addition to exciting lectures, workshops on current topics such as sustainability and digitalization are offered. Science meets entertainment
What is a science slam? This dynamic and entertaining way of imparting knowledge means that young scientists have to present their projects in just ten minutes - and in a way that delights the audience. During their lectures, which take place in relaxed locations such as clubs, theaters or even pubs, there is an exciting vote by the audience. This means that both science nerds and committed laypeople can experience first hand how diverse and interesting research is. Science Slam has built up a loyal following, ranging from students to retirees to potential science enthusiasts.
In times when scientific findings make a decisive contribution to overcoming social challenges, the importance of scientific communication should not be underestimated. It was already anchored in the 2021 coalition agreement that citizens should be better informed about scientific topics. The work of the BMFTR shows how important dialogue between researchers and the public is in order to work together on solutions to society's pressing problems.
