Motorcyclist seriously injured: dramatic accident near Ampermoching!
On Sunday afternoon there was a serious motorcycle accident near Ampermoching, which had tragic consequences for everyone involved. A 40-year-old motorcyclist from Schwabhausen was seriously injured in the accident. The accident occurred around 2 p.m. when an 82-year-old driver from Oberschleißheim overlooked the biker while turning. The impact was violent and caused gasoline to leak from the motorcycle's tank, which quickly ignited. As a result, the fire spread to both the motorcycle and the car, which further dramatized the situation.
Fortunately, the two occupants of the car, the 82-year-old and his 75-year-old wife, were able to free themselves from the burning vehicle. A first aider and the police officers who were called immediately provided first aid and were able to save the seriously injured motorcyclist from the flames. He was eventually taken to an accident clinic by rescue helicopter, while the car and motorcycle were completely burned out.
Road safety in focus
The incident sheds further light on the current traffic situation in Germany, where around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were registered in 2024. This marks a decline compared to the previous year, with the number of property damage accidents increasing while personal injury accidents remained at levels not seen since 1955. In all of 2024, 2,770 people lost their lives in road traffic, a decrease compared to the 19,193 deaths in 1970, as Statista reports.
The most common causes of traffic accidents in Germany are insufficient distance, inadequate speed and alcohol-impaired driving. In 2024, 40% of personal injury accidents were attributed to alcohol, resulting in 198 deaths and 17,776 injuries. E-bikes and e-scooters in particular are increasingly being involved in accidents, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure and increased awareness among road users.
Measures for more security
The “Vision Zero” road safety strategy, which aims to achieve zero road deaths by 2050, is being vigorously pursued by EU transport ministers. To achieve this goal, significant improvements in infrastructure and the introduction of autonomous vehicles are necessary.
The state road at the accident site in Ampermoching had to be closed for around three hours due to the fire, which brought all traffic to a standstill. The material damage to the road surface is estimated at several thousand euros. Such incidents illustrate how important road safety is and that every road user can do their part.
While this represents another black day on the roads, the hope remains that such tragedies can be avoided in the future through education and targeted action. The numbers of traffic accidents in Germany are worrying and require collective action.
