Dachau shines: progress and bee award 2025!
On December 22, 2025, the city of Dachau can look back on an eventful year. Remarkable progress was made last year, which has had a positive impact on the cityscape. The infrastructure has been fundamentally improved with the renovation of roads and the continuation of new buildings for daycare centers and the East Primary School. Digitalization and citizen services have also received a boost, and numerous cultural events are revitalizing social interaction in the city center. Mayor Florian Hartmann praises the measures and speaks of a clear direction for the city's further development.
The award that Dachau received in 2025 as one of the three most bee-friendly municipalities in Upper Bavaria is particularly pleasing. According to dachau.de, the city fully meets the strict criteria for this title. The city has not only stopped using pesticides on urban areas, but has also implemented many bee-friendly measures. This includes, among other things, avoiding the use of herbicides containing glyphosate in leased areas and converting green strips into flower strips. For example, around 70 hectares of bee- and insect-friendly plantings ensure a thriving cityscape and a healthy ecosystem.
Bee-friendly urban development
As kurier-dachau.de reports, cities also receive financial incentives for their commitment to biodiversity. Dachau received prize money of €1,000 for third place in the competition category, which is intended to flow specifically into bee-friendly projects. In addition, the city has proven that the protection of biodiversity and the promotion of biodiversity are taken seriously by providing parking spaces for bee houses and bee colonies and by building a bee educational trail in the Dachau Hofgarten.
In the Schinderkreppe, an important local recreation area, 18 species of wild bees have been detected, including endangered species. This impressively shows how important such measures are not only for the bees, but also for the quality of life of the citizens.
A look into the future
There are still big plans in the pipeline for 2026. The city has announced investments in education, care and infrastructure, with the focus being on the completion of the daycare center on Pollnstrasse and the opening of a new indoor swimming pool after the 2023 outdoor swimming season. These projects are intended not only to improve the quality of life of Dachau residents, but also to contribute to the revitalization of the city center and at the same time secure affordable housing, as the mayor put it.
The city of Dachau's commitment to a bee-friendly and livable environment is crying out for imitators. Because not only the well-being of bees lies in the hands of politicians, the responsibility for attractive and sustainable urban development must also be addressed with vigor in the coming period. In this sense, it remains to be seen how the further plans and projects will develop and what new impulses urban development funding can provide in Dachau in order to further advance the connection between quality of life, climate protection and biological diversity - an all-round approach that will certainly bear fruit if it is implemented well.
The focus remains not just on bees, but also on holistic urban development, which offers promising approaches for a sustainable future.
