Invitation to natural garden diversity: closing event in Bayreuth!

In Bayreuth, everything revolves around promoting biodiversity and natural garden design. As part of the “Neatly Sloppy – Habitat for Animals and Plants” program, which took place from May to October 2025, numerous activities were launched to raise citizens' awareness of the importance of local flora and fauna. The main actors in this initiative are the Bayreuth Regional Management and the Ecological-Botanical Garden of the University of Bayreuth, which worked closely together to put together a colorful program. So reported Wiesentbote that the events received high approval from the population, which makes it very likely that they will continue next year.

The exhibitions and workshops focused on the natural design of gardens and the promotion of biodiversity. A central concern was to explain the role of dead wood, sand and stones as important elements in creating habitats. The traveling exhibition, which was on view at the ÖBG from May 4th to October 12th, showed at 24 stations in the garden's outdoor area how each individual can contribute to promoting biodiversity in their own garden.

Closing event on October 21st

The closing event will take place on October 21st at 6 p.m. in the Lindenhof Environmental Information Center. Mayor Thomas Ebersberger will be present here to welcome you and give a review of the event year. Participants can look forward to an interactive plant game in collaboration with the Summer Bayreuth association. Information material on nature-related topics and small catering are also offered, while Dr. Alan Fabian and Aaron Wettengel present the “Wulmersreuth Soundscapes” project. This sound installation takes listeners into the sound world of a horse farm and is presented in a compressed version of just 20 minutes. Registration for the event is required.

Diverse events and offers

The program of events surrounding the exhibition included not only the traveling exhibition itself, but also various guided tours, lectures and workshops to promote biodiversity in your own garden. For example, wild herb workshops and tours were offered, including by the adult education centers in the city and district of Bayreuth as well as by the Bayreuth Hermitage Palace and Garden Administration. The events were largely free and did not require prior registration, ensuring broad accessibility.

The opening of the exhibition took place on May 4, 2025 with a tour on the topic “Garden habitat: promoting biodiversity” at 10:00 a.m. and the official opening at 11:30 a.m. by Mayor Ebersberger and Prof. Susanne Tittlbach. Other offerings included the ÖBG garden café, which opened its doors after the opening and informed visitors about the topics of natural gardening while sitting together in a cozy atmosphere. The full event program is available on the portal for anyone interested www.region-bayreuth.de available.

The numerous initiatives and the great interest of the population show that the desire for natural garden design and the preservation of local biodiversity is very popular. With a good hand and a creative approach to designing our gardens, we can together make a valuable contribution to nature. Get involved and support biodiversity!
