Bamberg gets involved: Together against garbage on World Cleanup Day!
On September 19, 2025, Bamberg will once again be the scene of a major citizens' movement dedicated to the global fight against environmental pollution. The World Cleanup Day calls on all citizens to actively participate in the garbage collection campaign. Last year it was the water rescue service that collected scrap metal in the Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal. This year, all Bamberg residents are invited to get involved at various collection points throughout the city from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and work together to clean up the garbage that has been thrown into the environment.
If you look at the numbers, it quickly becomes clear how important such actions are. Over 22 million people from 190 countries took part in World Cleanup Day in 2024. Also the organization worldcleanupday.de shows that the day is not just a local but a global concern. Over 70 million people from more than 190 nations have taken part since the initiative was founded. This clearly shows that contributing to a clean environment is no small matter.
Take action into your own hands
Participating in the promotion is easy. Everyone is invited to register in advance www.stadt.bamberg.de/worldcleanupday to register. It is important to bring your own materials such as gloves, grippers and buckets - the city of Bamberg also provides garbage bags. The filled garbage bags must be handed in to the collection points by 12 p.m. at the latest, where they will then be picked up by Bamberg Service from the waste-to-energy plant.
An important point of observation awaits the people of Bamberg: The problematic waste that is collected includes cigarette butts, plastic bag residues and old glass bottles. It is alarming to know that plastic film takes up to 120 years to decompose, while glass bottles can remain in the environment for up to a million years. It is therefore the responsibility of each individual to accept this challenge.
World Cleanup Day in a global context
World Cleanup Day has now established itself as a fixture in the United Nations calendar and is celebrated on September 20th. It not only symbolizes global cohesion, but also the commitment to a clean and healthy environment. At the UN SDG Action Awards 2023 in Rome, the “Let’s Do It” movement was honored for its coordination of these waste collection actions. Such awards underline the importance of World Cleanup Day.
Anyone who would like to roll up their sleeves and get involved on this day is warmly invited on September 19th. In addition, this day also offers the opportunity not only to make your own district cleaner, but also to be part of a global commitment.
Be there on September 19th and help make Bamberg a little more beautiful!
