Risky overtaking maneuver on Kesselberg: Police shocked by motorcyclist!

A risky overtaking maneuver on Kesselberg causes quite a stir. On June 12th, a 25-year-old motorcyclist from Munich carried out a daring overtaking with his BMW S 1000 RR, even though there was a no-overtaking zone and a narrow road that was only 3.5 meters wide. The Holzkirchen motorway police set up a checkpoint at a viewing curve in the morning and observed what was happening from there. At around 11:15 a.m. the driver, who showed no respect for the rules, was immediately stopped. Contrary to the police's well-considered measures, he expressed incomprehension and explained that having fun driving was more important to him than staying behind other vehicles. He also missed a nearby race track. He responded to the danger of his overtaking by saying that he couldn't talk to the police. According to the police, the driver showed no insight or remorse and must now expect a fine of around 200 euros and a summons to take traffic lessons, as the PNP reports.

But what is the problem with Kesselberg? In the Bad Tölz district there has long been a ban on motorcycles on the B 11, which has repeatedly caused discussions in recent years. After a test phase to lift the general driving ban on weekends and public holidays took place in 2023, the results showed significant success: the number of accidents was reduced by 40 percent. This test phase lasted from April 1, 2023 to October 31, 2024. In view of the positive developments, the Bad Tölz district office decided on new measures in January 2025. Since then, there has been an annual driving ban for motorcycles from Kochel towards Walchensee, which applies from Monday to Friday between 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and on weekends and public holidays from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., as motorradonline.de describes.

Reasons for the ban

With 78 percent of accidents occurring between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. and 91 percent of serious accidents caused by motorcyclists, the need for the regulation is easy to understand. Although motorcycles only make up 13 percent of the total traffic on the route, the various measures to avoid accidents have not been sufficient in the past. Speed limits, rumble strips and central guide rails have already been tested, but the risk to traffic safety remains high. Over the years, an average of 30 moderate and severe accidents have occurred in the summer, 75 percent of which were caused by motorcyclists.

The current route closure on the B 11 has existed since June 17, 1978. However, there are also voices who are fighting against these route closures. Among other things, an objection was submitted by a motorcyclist who pays vehicle tax and finds the closures unfair. He argues that the entire motorcycling community should not be punished for individual misconduct. Instead, the responsible authorities should take action against those who ignore the applicable law, as reference is made to motorradundreisen.de.

It is somewhat clear that the tests and changes in the traffic regulations for motorcyclists on the Kesselberg represent a comprehensive issue. The new regulations aim to ensure safe coexistence on the road - a challenge that requires all sorts of discussion.
