King Ludwig II and Bismarck: An exciting exhibition in Bad Kissingen!

In Bad Kissingen, history lovers will enjoy an exciting exhibition that sheds light on the eventful relationship between King Ludwig II and Otto von Bismarck. Under the title “King Ludwig II and Bad Kissingen – Imperial Cure and Franconian Journey”, the interesting presentation runs until August 30, 2026 in the Obere Saline Museum. In particular, it focuses on Ludwig's only official business trip, which took place in 1866 and led from Munich to Kissingen. The health resort plays a central role here, because in 1864 Ludwig II met both the Russian Tsar and the Austrian imperial couple in Kissingen.

The exhibition offers a wealth of exhibits and media stations that give visitors insights into Ludwig's complex work in Bad Kissingen. In addition to historical documents, there are also interactive elements that bring the connection between King Ludwig and Bad Kissingen to life. The accompanying publication "King Ludwig II and Bad Kissingen. Kaiserkur & Franconian Journey", edited by Peter Weidisch, offers deeper insights into the king's life and costs €25.00. A little note for those who want to make their visit to the museum even more pleasant: The museum's café offers a selection of hot and cold drinks as well as snacks.

Insights into the relationship between Ludwig II and Bismarck

The relationship between Ludwig II and Otto von Bismarck was marked by tensions. While Ludwig II played a key role in the proclamation of William I as emperor in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles in 1870, the collaboration between the two men was not without conflict. Ludwig sought a Greater German solution that would have included Austria, while Bismarck sought Hessian dominance. These differences were exacerbated by Ludwig's financial difficulties, which Bismarck cleverly exploited to achieve his political goals.

The “Kaiserbrief”, signed by Ludwig II and Bismarck, was published on November 30, 1870. It called for support for the presidential rights of the new German Empire. This agreement only came about against the background of Ludwig's financial hardship, who ultimately received support from Prussia. Over the years, Ludwig had received more than six million gold marks, which repeatedly caused controversy and raised questions about the boundaries between state and personal assets.
