Yellow ribbon in the Fichtelgebirge: save fruit instead of letting it go to waste!

Something special is happening in the picturesque slopes of the Fichtelgebirge: The “Yellow Ribbon Fichtelgebirge” initiative brings a breath of fresh air to the fruit harvest and draws attention to unused fruit in our surroundings. The Fichtelgebirge District Association for Horticulture and Land Management has teamed up with the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Community to give this topic a stage. What is behind this beautiful idea?

The aim of the campaign is clear: to reduce food waste and encourage the population to use the fresh fruit from local fruit trees. Do you already know it? The trees marked for free harvesting for personal use can be marked with a clearly visible yellow band. This ribbon signals that everyone is warmly invited to pick the juicy fruits - without asking!

A call to all fruit tree owners

The district association calls all fruit tree owners in the Wunsiedel i.e. district. Fichtelgebirge to take part in the campaign. If you also have a fruit tree that is full of apples, pears or other delicious fruits, then your tree could be an ideal addition to the community. The yellow ribbons and the associated information boards for identification are available free of charge from the district office's citizen service, both report Hochfranken Live as well as Fichtelgebirge open space.

This campaign also aims to promote the rich diversity of local fruit and encourage the population to enjoy fruit in new, creative forms. And there are countless possibilities: from delicious cakes to fruity compotes to delicious povidel or dried fruit – there are no limits to your imagination!

The advantages of the initiative

What are the advantages of the “Yellow Ribbon Fichtelgebirge” campaign? In addition to reducing food waste, people gain access to fresh vitamins that grow right on their doorstep without much effort. Many types of fruit that hang on supporting trees often remain unused. The initiators now want to change that – and at the same time increase awareness of our local fruit.

The initiative not only has a direct benefit for nature, but also for the community. If everyone does their part, the supply of fresh, regional food can be significantly increased. Eating fresh fruit can also make people feel more connected to nature and their surroundings.

With this in mind: take advantage of the opportunity and join in! Interested citizens can find more information and conditions of participation on the homepage of the Fichtelgebirge District Association for Horticulture and Regional Conservation. Together you can make the fruit harvest bloom and at the same time do something good - for yourself and for the environment!
