Winter service in Weissenburg: 4,000 tons of salt for safe roads!
What is happening in Weißenburg and Gunzenhausen? The road maintenance department in both cities has its hands full keeping the road maintenance service in the district on its toes. As fraenkischer.de reports, numerous tasks are coordinated here. This includes not only route checks and traffic safety, but also mowing work and checking bridge structures and long-distance cycle paths. The entire program ensures a safe and easy-to-use transport infrastructure.
A very crucial point is winter service, which is carried out with perfect management due to the changing operating conditions. On a total of 283 kilometers of district roads, dedicated employees ensure that traffic remains flowing even in snow and ice. The roads are accessible every day from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m., and even around the clock if necessary. For this purpose, the road maintenance department has eight district-owned vehicles and one rented vehicle at its disposal.
Salt treasure and winter service vehicles
A warehouse of up to 4,000 tons of salt is kept ready in Weißenburg in order to be able to cover the average winter requirement of 1,500 to 1,600 tons for all roads in the district. The grit is stored in the summer months so that we can react quickly in the winter. The nineteen winter service vehicles are equipped with yellow rotating lights and additional lighting, which increases their visibility and at the same time contributes to traffic safety. On multi-lane roads, several clearing and gritting vehicles are often in use, which must act carefully and coordinated with one another. Drivers should therefore be particularly careful when overtaking, as it can be dangerous on uncleared sections if the roads are not optimally spread [strassenbau.niedersachsen.de].
The employees of the construction yards ensure that both sidewalks and roadways are cleared from early in the morning. Trained staff also take care of the maintenance and repair of the fleet in Weißenburg and Gunzenhausen. District Administrator Manuel Westphal is confident and recently visited the construction yard to get an idea of the winter service preparations. He reminded drivers to act with foresight due to the weather.
Efficiency and safety in road construction
The road operations service on federal highways, which also ensures road safety, carries out various tasks, from checking and maintaining roads to winter road clearance. The federal government invests over 1.7 billion euros annually in the preservation and maintenance of road infrastructure. 178 motorway maintenance departments and 545 road maintenance departments are responsible for the approximately 13,000 kilometers of federal motorways and 38,000 kilometers of federal roads, as can be read on bmv.de.
Whether mowing work, cleaning traffic areas or collecting and disposing of waste – road maintenance is an essential part of our everyday lives. With successful interaction and effective planning, those responsible make their contribution to the safety and functionality of our road network, especially in the cold season.
