Workshop to promote the culture of debate in Weiden - Be there!

On January 16, 2026, things get really busy at the Weiden-Neustadt Adult Education Center! An exciting workshop in preparation for the Long Night of Democracy, which will take place in October this year, starts at 4:30 p.m. In a keynote speech, Peter Corell will address the topic of “polarization in Germany” and explain how an empathetic culture of debate can be promoted. The event is an excellent opportunity to think about social cohesion in the Upper Palatinate - in the sense of clubs, schools and organizations.

But what exactly does this culture of debate mean? The term has many facets, such as: Wikipedia emerges. The basic rule is that you can represent your own point of view while also acknowledging the perspectives of others. The dispute itself is not inherently negative; it can help question old norms and find new paths. In our democratic society, the exchange of different opinions is essential, and this is precisely what the upcoming workshop will focus on.

Invitations and conditions of participation

The workshop is open to everyone – whether clubs, organizations, companies or individuals. However, people who have made extremist, anti-democratic or exclusionary statements in the past should remain outside. Accreditation is required for press representatives. The course number for anyone interested is SV100250.

The focus of the event is not only on imparting knowledge, but also on practical discussion of the culture of debate. The participants are encouraged to think creatively and work together to develop solutions. The aim is to promote fairness in the discussion and thus contribute to respectful cooperation. As in Education server can be read, aspects such as respect, appreciation and critical thinking also play a central role in democracy education.

Why dispute is important for democracy

At a time when many topics are discussed in a polarized manner, a constructive culture of debate is more important than ever. Conflicts should not be avoided, but rather resolved fairly. An increasing number of voices in the political landscape are also recognizing this. Because a good argument is not the end of a relationship, but an opportunity to grow and understand other perspectives. This becomes particularly important when it comes to living together in a plural society.

On October 2, 2026, the Long Night of Democracy will take place on the occasion of all these topics. The workshop is therefore the first step in working together on a positive culture of debate in the Upper Palatinate. And as you can see, there is every reason to look forward to this exchange. Anyone who is interested in exchanging ideas with like-minded people and being actively involved should definitely not miss the event!
