There is now a completely new service in Weiden, which is real progress not only for citizens, but also for the administration. From today, August 11, 2025, ID cards and passports can be picked up around the clock at the New Town Hall via a modern distribution box. This means a huge step towards digital administration and user-friendliness, as oberpfalzecho.de reports.
The new citizen service box is located in the main entrance area of the New Town Hall and can be used free of charge. To use this convenient service, citizens only need a smartphone. When you apply for an ID document, the use of the box is agreed upon at the same time. As soon as the document is ready for collection, applicants will receive a special code via SMS that allows collection outside of regular opening hours. This means you can still frantically grab your new ID card late in the evening without having to wait long.
Innovative technology at the service of citizens
Thanks to the connection to AKDB specialist procedures, the handover of sovereign documents and certificates is made particularly smart. This is particularly advantageous for small and medium-sized municipalities. The residents' registration offices in particular benefit from the citizen service box: Passports and identity cards are now issued here in a simple and secure manner, as akdb.de explains.
But that's not all! Integration into the specialist OK.EWO process opens up further possibilities that will make administration more efficient. In the future, documents from immigration authorities could also be collected via the box. In addition, plans are already being made to make vehicle documents in the transport sector available via these innovative collection stations. The system even allows more sensitive documents to be prepared for collection after applying online. Another benefit: the flexible handover of keys and access cards for the entire town hall.
