Protest against AfD in Tirschenreuth: Demonstration for an open Stiftland!
Resistance is emerging in the tranquil town of Tirschenreuth: The AfD is planning an event on August 14th in the Kettelerhaus, but the Left is not having it. Under the motto “There is no quiet Stiftland” they are calling for a counter-demonstration that will begin at 6:00 p.m. in front of the venue. Annie Schraml from the Left emphasizes the urgency of speaking out against the AfD. She sees the city of Tirschenreuth's support of the AfD as politically problematic and warns that this could send a dangerous signal.
An incident in Lübtheen just showed how serious the threat from the extreme right is. There the police found explosives and weapons on an AfD district council member. Thomas Wipper, the district spokesman for the Left, makes it clear that the presence of neo-Nazis and their influence on social issues cannot be ignored. With the counter-demo, the Left wants to send a strong signal against right-wing tendencies and for an open, solidarity-based society. All Democrats are called upon to take part in the protests and are welcome to bring signs and banners.
Demonstrations against the right across the country
The Tirschenreuth demonstration is part of a nationwide wave of protests that has been gaining momentum since the beginning of 2023. Millions of people in Germany have taken legal action against right-wing extremism. The protests are not only directed against the AfD, but also against possible cooperation between established parties and right-wing forces. These mobilized particularly after the major protest against the AfD party conference in Riesa in January, during which more than 1.7 million people took to the streets across the country.
The largest demonstration against the right, which took place in Munich on February 8, 2025, was particularly impressive. The authorities counted at least 250,000 participants here; the organizers even speak of 320,000. There was a similar wave of outrage in 2024 with over four million people demonstrating for democracy and against right-wing extremism. The trigger was reports about a meeting of right-wing extremists in which both AfD and CDU politicians were supposed to take part.
The mood in the political landscape remains tense. A recently submitted small inquiry by the CDU/CSU regarding state funding for NGOs such as “Grandmas Against the Right” and “Correctiv” has already caused vigorous discussions. Critics fear that the request is aimed at organizations that oppose right-wing extremism and, in some cases, the CDU/CSU.
The coming days could therefore be exciting not only for Tirschenreuth, but for the whole of Germany. All eyes are on the protests, which want to send a strong signal for an open society and against right-wing ideologies. Be there and make a statement!
