Artificial turf pitch opened in Straubing: A milestone for sport!
The time has finally come: on September 28, 2025, the first artificial turf pitch was officially inaugurated in Straubing. After 18 years of planning and a lot of commitment, this milestone has now become a reality for the city and its athletes. The ceremonial opening took place at the location next to the Am Peterswöhrd stadium, where representatives from various religious communities blessed the new space. Mayor Markus Pannermayr emphasized the importance of this investment for the region's sports landscape and young talent.
The construction period took around six months and cost the city a total of around 2.3 million euros, of which 1.5 million euros were covered by federal funding. When planning the artificial turf pitch, which has a playing field size of 105 by 68 meters, great importance was placed on sustainability. Over 70% of the materials used come from renewable raw materials, the elastic layer is made from 100% recycled material, and insect-friendly lighting ensures environmentally friendly use. Even the fibers of the court were designed to help avoid microplastics. These environmentally conscious approaches are not only contemporary, but also a step in the right direction for future sports projects.
A place for all athletes
The new artificial turf pitch will promote training and play for various sports, particularly soccer and American football. This means that the clubs in Straubing, especially FSV VfB Straubing and the Straubing Spiders, can rely on training and playing opportunities that are independent of the weather. Over 20 teams are already playing and the anticipation for the new pitch is huge. Manfred Schötz, a long-time VfB board member, was significantly involved in the planning and was visibly proud of the result at the opening.
To date, there has been no artificial turf pitch in the Straubing-Bogen district, while in the surrounding area, such as the Regensburg area, there are already over a dozen such sports facilities. The opening of this course represents an important step in strengthening the sporting infrastructure in the region and also promoting new talent. Bookings for club use will be possible from November 2025 via an online booking system, with special core times for your own club and flexible user blocks for other teams.
A big step for infrastructure
The construction of the artificial turf pitch at Peterswöhrd was also a logistical challenge. The site was once a landfill, and 86 environmental regulations had to be taken into account in order to successfully build the course. And it wasn't just a project from scratch; The planning began in 2007. The open day for the public after the inauguration gave the people of Straubing the opportunity to marvel at the new sports area and test the first training courses for the coming months.
The installation of a new LED floodlight system also ensures optimal lighting of the pitch, so that evening games will not pose any problems. Mayor Markus Pannermayr and Federal Minister Alois Rainer will carry out the first sporting test on the new site. With this opening, Straubing is sending a strong signal for the future of sport in the city and now offers a place for numerous activities. There is high hope that this artificial turf pitch will bring many sporting successes and great encounters.
For the entire sports community and the population, this place is a long-term benefit that has finally become a reality. Situations like these show that a lot can be achieved with persistence and cooperation - and all athletes can be proud of that!
