Waldherrhaus in Feldafing: Future uncertain – mayor demands solutions!

In Feldafing, an exciting story unfolds about the Waldherrhaus, which Mayor Bernhard Sontheim describes as a “Feldafing fillet”. But the first impression is deceptive, as merkur.de reports. The building is currently empty and is in serious need of renovation. Citizens and members of the local council should think about the future of the Waldherrhaus in the coming years, as Sontheim suggested. The next municipal council election will take place in March 2026.

However, the municipality currently does not have the necessary funds and personnel capacity for renovation or a possible new building. As a result, it was decided in autumn 2022 to no longer rent out the vacant apartments in the Waldherrhaus. Only a small one-room apartment is used as homeless shelter, as the municipality is legally obliged to offer homeless people accommodation.

New building and local council discussions

The last tenant left the house around four weeks ago, and the municipality is already planning new accommodation for homeless people in the Old Town Hall. However, this will not be completed before autumn 2025. Mayor Sontheim has put the plans for the Waldherrhaus on hold for the time being due to a lack of resources. Matthias Schremser from the CSU even brought up a local model for families in the area, while Dr. Michael Keltsch fromAuf encouraged an in-depth discussion in a closed meeting about the Waldherrhaus.

As Sontheim noted, a new building would have to be designed sensibly in terms of urban planning. He urged the local council not to undertake any further work until this was clarified, and fortunately the committee unanimously accepted this request.

The challenge of homelessness

The issue surrounding the Waldherrhaus reflects a larger problem. The national action plan to overcome homelessness, which was adopted on April 24, 2024, aims to end homelessness and homelessness in Germany by 2030. According to bmwsb.bund.de, over 1.3 million people in Europe were already homeless in 2024.

In Germany, current statistics report 531,600 homeless people. The importance of establishing cooperation between federal, state and local governments, as well as civil society, is becoming increasingly obvious in order to effectively address this crisis. Especially in Feldafing, where the community already has a duty to help the homeless, it is important to find constructive solutions.

The coming months will show how the discussions surrounding the Waldherrhaus develop. A good hand will be required both to meet the challenges of accommodating people in need and to advance the future planning for a more attractive residential landscape in Feldafing.
