District election is approaching: Who will be the new boss in the Starnberg district?

The local elections in Bavaria are taking place on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Voters in the Starnberg district can look forward to an exciting race for the post of district administrator. The incumbent district administrator Stefan Frey from the CSU is running again and has strong support behind him. This was reported by the South German newspaper, which lists the most important candidates and parties.

Frey is being challenged by Michaela Eisenschmid (Free Voters), Roman Sonnenberg (AfD), Benjamin Baro (Greens) and Markus Deschler (FDP). Once again, the CSU seems to be on a good course with Frey, especially since the SPD in the district has decided to run without its own candidate and instead support Frey, as he did District messengers reported.

The district council election in view

Numerous parties have put forward their candidates for the district council elections. The CSU, Free Voters, AfD, Greens, SPD, FDP, The Left and the ÖDP are entering the race. What is particularly noteworthy is that the ÖDP has reached the required number of supporter signatures (385), of which a total of 680 valid signatures were submitted to the district authority. In contrast, the election proposal of the Basic Democratic Party of Germany was not approved due to a lack of signatures, as only 59 signatures were submitted.

The SPD has drawn up its district council list with over 60 candidates, which is led by Christiane Feichtmeier, member of the state parliament and district chairwoman. The first ten places are filled as follows:

Place name
1 Christiane Feichtmeier
2 Christian Winklmeier
3 Christiane Falk
4 Manfred Walter
5 Elisabeth Fuchsenberger
6 Dr. Frank Hauser
7 Steffi Weller
8 Matthias Hellwig
9 Christel Muggenthal
10 Claus Angerbauer

Weller, who is running as mayoral candidate from Gilching, enthusiastically welcomed the delegates and guests. What is particularly noteworthy is that, in the spirit of equality, the list up to place 48 was designed according to the zipper principle, which promotes the integration of different age groups.

Electoral procedures and significance of elections

Bavaria's local elections are known for their importance in local political events. Around 39,500 local elected officials are elected for six years, including mayors, local council members, district administrators and district councilors. The elections take place in a transparent procedure, which can also be attended by nationals of EU member states under certain conditions. The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for organizing these elections, which actively involve all citizens entitled to vote.

Anyone who wants to vote on March 8th has the opportunity to cast their vote in different ways, be it through cumulation or variegation. Every vote counts and voters have an influence on the future shape of their communities and districts Bavarian Wahlverlag represents.

There is great anticipation for the municipal decisions, and the coming weeks until the election will show how the balance of power in the Starnberg district will be redefined. A good hand and a keen ear for citizens' concerns are required in order to respond in the best possible way to the challenges of the coming years.
