Attention: Police warn of sophisticated telephone scammers!

The police in Starnberg and Geretsried are sounding the alarm: There are currently increasing reports of fraudulent calls in which the perpetrators act as “fake police officers”. The scam is perfidious and varies, but one goal unites all cases: to defraud unsuspecting citizens of their money and valuables. Things get particularly dramatic when the fraudsters talk about an allegedly arrested burglar who is said to have obtained the personal data of the person being called. So they try to exert pressure and demand jewelry or cash to “the police”. Alternatively, they state that a relative caused an accident and urgently needs bail. Such “shock calls” are currently booming, mainly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays of this week.

What should you do when the phone rings and such a bold request is made? The police have clear instructions. She emphasizes that real officers never call 110 or anonymously. “We never ask for money or valuables over the phone,” said a spokesman. Deposits or advance payments for medical treatment are also a clear sign of fraud. If you are unsure, you should end the conversation immediately and consult friends or trustworthy people or contact the real police directly - and not using the callback button.

Fraud attempts in the region

These scam calls don't come out of nowhere. The police speak of an increased volume in Starnberg, Geretsried and Dietramszell. Fortunately, there have been no successful cases of fraud to report so far, but the risk of becoming a victim is real. The perpetrators are often very adept at manipulating information and can use their persuasive arguments to corner even the most suspicious people.

The scammers' approach to the calls varies. In addition to the “fake policeman” scam, the “fake doctor” tactic is also used, in which relatives are pressured into paying in advance for therapy that is supposedly necessary. The police appeal to citizens to be particularly vigilant and not to allow themselves to be put under pressure by emotional statements.
