The renovation of the Leopoldina Hospital in Schweinfurt is gaining momentum. Big changes are coming with a new parking garage that is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. The need for this new building is undisputed, as the existing parking garage on Hennebergstrasse has been closed for structural reasons since July 2023. Managing director Jürgen Winter presented the schedule at a meeting of the main and finance committee, which includes both the demolition of the old building and the new construction. The slope into which the new parking garage is to be integrated represents a particular challenge. In addition, asbestos was found during the demolition, which makes the work more complicated.

The Leopoldina Hospital took over the project for the new parking garage at the end of 2023. According to radioprimaton.de, the total costs for demolition and new construction are around 13 million euros. A feasibility study suggests that more than 350 new parking spaces will be created at the existing location in a combination of parking garage and surface parking. The renovation of the old parking garage was deemed uneconomical, so the focus is now on the new building.

The schedule for the new building

Preparations for the demolition are in full swing. Work is scheduled to begin at the turn of the year, including the construction of a shoring to secure the slope and the excavation of the construction pit. A highlight of the new parking garage will be the greening of the roof area, which is not only visually appealing but also contributes to improving the environment. In addition, a photovoltaic system to generate electricity is planned.

The new parking garage is scheduled to be completed by 2026. Jürgen Winter repeatedly emphasizes that the planning began when the old parking garage was closed, which accelerated the entire process. The extensive measure will also serve to significantly improve the parking situation for patients and visitors. A new system-built parking garage, similar to the one that already exists on Mainberger Strasse, will soon enrich the image of Hennebergstrasse.
