Free parking for electric cars in Rosenheim: Where and for how long?

Rosenheim is becoming a pioneer in the promotion of electromobility. Since April 1, 2025, electric cars in Bavaria have been able to park for free for up to three hours. This regulation, introduced by the Bavarian state government, aims to boost the sale of electric cars and thus promote environmentally friendly e-mobility. But not everyone is enthusiastic about this measure.

In Rosenheim, for example, there was criticism from city councilors who saw the decision as an interference with local self-government. The city council voted with a clear majority against the inclusion of free parking for electric cars in its own parking fee regulations, thereby providing material for discussion in local politics. Christian Baab, press spokesman for the city, has made it clear that the state legal regulation supersedes the municipal statutes, which means that electric cars can continue to park for free in Rosenheim, despite political resistance.

Prices and parking rules for electric cars

Particularly interesting: The maximum parking time for electric cars on the side of the road is two hours. This was confirmed by the government of Upper Bavaria. On the Loretowiese, however, electric car drivers are allowed to stay stationary for up to three hours. To take advantage of this scheme, drivers must use a parking disc, which must be clearly visible behind the windshield to correctly display the parking time.

As far as the regulations for free parking are concerned, they only apply in public parking spaces marked by the blue “P” traffic sign. Private parking spaces, such as those with barriers or in parking garages, are excluded from the fee exemption. In addition, municipalities can create their own solutions, such as converting parking meters to offer free tickets for electric cars.

Focus on environmentally friendly mobility

This initiative is intended not only to increase the attractiveness of electric vehicles in urban areas, but also to contribute to air pollution control and reduce the noise from vehicles. Drivers are encouraged to find out about the current regulations at the parking meters in order to avoid misunderstandings.

Parking for electric cars is on the rise in many cities, and the new regulations in Bavaria show that electric mobility is increasingly becoming the focus of politics. It remains to be seen whether Rosenheim has the right touch. What is clear, however, is that the image of parking in the city will change, and many electric car drivers are happy about these new options. If you have any questions about the regulations, please refer to the website Mobilitree available as an additional source of information.

Ultimately, all we can hope for is that the city finds a solution that meets both the needs of e-car drivers and municipal requirements, while other cities in the neighborhood will soon follow suit.
