Peiting becomes part of the St. James cycle pilgrimage route: new opportunities for pilgrims!
Whit Monday will remain an important date for the community of Peiting. On this day it was officially announced that Peiting is now part of the Jakobus cycle pilgrimage network. Mayor Peter Ostenrieder placed the bicycle pilgrimage sign on the Christ Church, which is now considered a bicycle pilgrimage church and thus welcomes visitors to the region. This not only marks a new phase for the community, but also the opportunity to further develop Peiting's infrastructural and tourist offerings, which already include bicycle shops, overnight accommodation and medical care, such as Merkur reports.
The new cycle pilgrimage routes fit effortlessly into the existing network of over 5,200 kilometers, which has been signposted with the Jakobus sign since 2020. Fortunately, the community was already able to welcome the first bicycle pilgrims who traveled from Seeshaupt and covered an impressive 70 kilometers. These initiatives were supported by committed personalities such as Pastor Brigitte Weggel, Mayor Ostenrieder and pilgrim leader Jürgen Nitz, who came out of retirement to motivate the cycle pilgrimage network.
The importance of the St. James cycle pilgrimage route
According to Jürgen Nitz, the high demand for cycling pilgrimages shows that many people are looking for the combination of sport and spirituality. “In recent years there has been a real pilgrimage boom,” he says. This is evident not only on the famous routes to Santiago de Compostela, but also here in Germany, where more and more people are traveling along historical routes used by pilgrims. Also den-jakobsweg-ertreib.de points out that thousands of pilgrims come to the German Way of St. James every year, which further boosts the trend of cycling pilgrimages.
By being integrated into the Jakobus cycle pilgrimage network, Peiting has the opportunity to increase its visibility and position itself as an attractive destination for cycle pilgrims. With a well-developed infrastructure and connections to existing pilgrimage routes, Pastor Weggel sees this as a great opportunity to make the community even better known. “This is an opportunity for all of us,” she emphasizes, speaking from the hearts of many people.
Infrastructure and development
As the travel routes through Bavaria make clear, not only the pilgrims but also the communities have a great interest in this development. The decision to integrate Peiting into the cycle pilgrimage network was made about a year ago, and the necessary preparations - such as installing the new signage - were carried out by the municipal building yard. It is a process that proves beneficial for everyone involved.
The new paths and the opportunity to cycle along the Jakobus cycle pilgrimage routes in Peiting are definitely a benefit for the region. This not only appeals to the cycling public; the attractiveness of the culture and history of these paths is brought to the fore.
