Trial bans on passage in Ostallgäu: focus on the cause of traffic jams on the A7!
A new chapter in transport policy is now being opened in the Ostallgäu district. The Bavarian State Chancellery has announced that it will introduce a trial ban on the passage of vehicles due to evasive traffic caused by traffic jams. The problem is as old as the motorway itself: the regular traffic jams on the A7, which are caused in particular by the blockage at the border tunnel near Füssen. An initiative by mayors from Füssen, Nesselwang, Oy-Mittelberg and Pfronten has now led to this decision after they had already submitted a petition to the state parliament at the beginning of the year South German newspaper reported.
The exact details of the start and implementation of these bans are still up in the air. Affected communities must first submit applications so that the transit bans can come into force. The police in Ostallgäu will keep a close eye on compliance with the bans, while the situation in the neighboring districts is not without its problems: In the Rosenheim district, departure bans have been in effect on weekends and public holidays for certain exits on the A8 and A93 since mid-August.
Traffic jams and traffic on the A7
At the same time, the A7 is one of the main traffic arteries, which is often affected by traffic jams. According to current traffic reports from September 26, 2025, there are significant delays. For example, on the route from Kassel towards Hanover between Wetterschacht and Harz, there was a traffic jam with a delay of up to 110 minutes and an average speed of just 4 km/h, as on the website stau-a7.de is reported.
The A7, which stretches over 962 kilometers from the Danish to the Austrian border, has its pitfalls. While traffic levels are high during holiday periods and at construction sites, the Hamburg Elbe Tunnel and the greater Hanover area are particularly well-known traffic jams. A look at the current reports also shows slow traffic and traffic jams in the directions of Ulm and Würzburg as well as Fulda and Kassel - a challenge for all travelers.
Approaches to improve the situation
In the past, Tyrol has already gained experience with traffic bans, which are monitored by specially trained “road supervisory bodies”. A similar approach could be pursued in Ostallgäu in order to sustainably improve the traffic situation. In view of the over 400 violations of the existing departure regulations in the Rosenheim district, it is clear that strict control is essential.
The coming months could be crucial for traffic development in Ostallgäu. It is therefore all the more important that all road users adhere to the new regulations and are prepared to use alternative routes to relieve congestion in the region. In this situation, it is crucial that everyone involved pulls together - because everyone has a good idea of how we can get the traffic chaos under control.
