Remembrance Day is not just a local event but has a long history. It was first introduced on March 5, 1922 and was launched by the German War Graves Commission to commemorate the victims of the First World War. Today this day is celebrated two Sundays before the first Advent and commemorates the fallen of all nations and civilians who lost their lives due to violence and wars. Wikipedia describes that the German Bundestag also plays a central role in the official celebrations, including a speech by the Federal President.

Insight into the changes in commemoration

Over the years, the meaning of Remembrance Day has also changed. The People's League explains that today the focus is no longer just on fallen soldiers. Rather, all victims of war and tyranny are remembered. These changes are reflected in the various celebrations organized by communities. A sign of solidarity between mourners and the rest of the citizens is at the center of the event.

Remembrance Day remains an important part of the German culture of remembrance, which is particularly important in times like these, in which violence and conflict are still present.
