Tiktok hikers in need: Mountain rescue rescues inexperienced explorers!

Sometimes the path to the mountains leads astray - and that's exactly what happened recently to two young adults who wanted to hike to the popular Schrecksee in the Allgäu Alps on November 9, 2025. How RTL According to reports, the two holidaymakers ultimately had to call the Hinterstein mountain rescue service for help due to a lack of experience and incorrect equipment.

The hikers said they had relied on information from TikTok, which turned out to be a fatal mistake. In the middle of the steep, snow-covered terrain at an altitude of 2,000 meters, they were overwhelmed and did not dare go forward or backward. The alarm sounded on Saturday, November 8th, when the inexperienced hikers called 911 and asked for assistance.

Snow conditions and incorrect equipment

The mountain rescue team quickly discovered that the two were completely incorrectly equipped and inexperienced when they found themselves in the wintry terrain. At altitudes above around 1,600 meters the conditions are already quite wintry, which can pose complications for unprepared hikers. The mountain rescue service warns urgently: such tours should only be undertaken by experienced mountaineers.

Rescuing the hikers required the use of a “helicopter suitable for night flights”, which put the existing mountain rescue structures to a tough test. The incident also illustrates how important it is to find out about the conditions from reputable sources before a tour - in order to avoid risky missions.

Costs and responsibility

Another important point is that the costs of rescue operations must be borne by those rescued themselves, unless they have special insurance. Many hikers are often not aware of this fact and, as in this case, can lead to unpleasant surprises.

It is to be hoped that the story of these two hikers serves as a warning signal to others. Because when it comes to tours in the mountains, a good hand in planning can make the difference between weal and woe. And despite the seemingly straightforward information from social media, the old wisdom about the dangers in the mountains should always be heeded.
