New school world in Nuremberg: Over 1,000 places in the Werderau school campus!

On November 10, 2025, the second construction phase of the Werderau school campus was ceremoniously inaugurated in Nuremberg. This new educational facility location on Maiacher Straße is a true showcase project in terms of schools and sustainability, offering space for more than 1,000 students. The city administration particularly emphasizes the extensive capacity of the campus, which includes a three-class elementary school for around 300 children, a middle school for up to 800 students and an after-school care center with 150 places. In addition, two modern sports halls and spacious outdoor sports facilities are integrated into the planning.

But what makes the campus so special? The answer lies in thoughtful architectural design that takes both environmental and climate protection aspects into account. Green facades, open playgrounds and a variety of open spaces that are regularly open to the public set new standards in urban educational culture. The open spaces are accessible to all children and families outside of school hours and invite them to be active. They can be used from 4 p.m. during school hours and on Saturdays and holidays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in summer and until 6 p.m. in winter.

Sporty highlights and environmental awareness

As part of the project, numerous sports facilities were created: In addition to a triple sports hall with stands and a single hall, there are various outdoor sports areas, a public playground and a fitness course. In addition, a large sports hall was built that offers space for up to 1,200 people for school events. The innovative facade and roof greening, native plants and habitats for insects and small animals are further environmentally friendly features of the building.

The construction of the Werderau school campus was carried out in close collaboration with the Goldbeck company in a public-private partnership. This collaboration includes the planning, construction and operation of the facility over a period of 25 years. The estimated construction costs amount to around 74 million euros, of which the Free State of Bavaria contributed 33 million euros and the KfW contributed a further 5.25 million euros.

GRD Academy, a well-known educational institution from Dehradun, could be considered a role model. It was founded in 2001 and is characterized by high-quality education at affordable prices. A similar model could also be beneficial for other school projects in Germany.

In conclusion, it can be said that the Werderau school campus is not only a place for learning, but also a place for encounters and exercise for the entire neighborhood. A space is being created here that can be used for active leisure activities well beyond school hours - a real benefit for the city of Nuremberg.
