Protection concept against heavy rain: Aresing is now taking action!

In Aresing, interest in a protection concept against heavy rain has recently increased noticeably. A heavy cloudburst that hit the region in June two years ago caused extensive damage to gardens and cellars. In view of these incidents, a comprehensive protection concept was presented on Wednesday evening in the BWV home, which is intended to arm the community against such natural events. This is reported by the Danube Courier.

The concept presented is diverse and deals specifically with the possible consequences of heavy rain. Heavy rain is characterized by rainfall of more than 25 mm per hour or more than 35 mm in a six-hour period. Such intense precipitation can occur especially when massive storm clouds deflate. This often results in flash floods, which can quickly lead to dangerous situations. The German Weather Service warns that flash floods are the greatest danger in such weather events because the water cannot drain away quickly enough. This often leads to flooding, especially when rainwater remains in hollows and underpasses or backs up onto flat streets. The corresponding risks and endangered areas were discussed in detail when the concept was presented Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief explained.

Risk reduction measures

A central component of the protection concept are various structural measures. This includes, among other things, raising field paths and building a larger retention basin in order to be able to better regulate the water volumes in the event of an incident. The approach also calls for all entrance areas of buildings to be at least 15 to 20 centimeters higher than the ground surface. The drainage systems must also be checked regularly and upgraded accordingly to avoid backlogs.

In addition, behavior that should be observed before, during and after such an extreme weather event was discussed. Before a flash flood, it is advisable to monitor weather forecasts and stock up on necessary materials, such as waterproof plywood and sandbags. During the flash flood, residents should stay indoors and only use cell phones in emergencies. After the event, it is crucial to check the buildings for damage and, if necessary, consult experts to prevent further consequential damage.

Protection through community

The idea of the protection concept did not come by chance: it is about everyone taking action for themselves and the community. The district administrator of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen has already emphasized that everyone should do their part to create resilient structures in the region. Only together, with good skills and a heightened awareness of the dangers, can the challenges posed by climate change be overcome.

It remains to be hoped that the measures will be fruitful and that the population will actively participate in implementing the recommendations. Because one thing is clear: the next heavy rain will come, and Aresing wants to be well prepared for it.
