Ten exciting world premieres at the Munich Film Festival 2025!

An exciting event is just around the corner: The 42nd Munich Film Festival is announcing a real treat for cinephiles this year. On the last day of the festival, public Sunday, no fewer than ten international productions will be able to be admired as world premieres. This means that the festival has seen a positive increase in its share price, as this represents an increase of four world premieres compared to the previous year. Thanks to the new artistic management team under Julia Weigl and Christoph Gröner, the Munich Film Festival is increasingly perceived as an important summer festival, even in comparison to the renowned Karlovy Vary. Those responsible are consciously taking note of this development, but the focus is not primarily on the international world premieres, but rather on the festival's entire offering. The films are presented in different sections and competitions, which underlines the diversity film-tv-video.de reported.

A look at the competitions shows that creative minds from Germany and beyond submit their works. The CineCoPro competition, which focuses on German co-productions, has five world premieres on the program:

CineCoPro competition

  • „Comandante Fritz“ – Regie: Pavel Giroud | Deutschland, Griechenland, Spanien – Eine Liebeskomödie und Satire über Sozialismus.
  • „Germaine Acogny – The Essence of Dance“ – Buch & Regie: Greta-Marie Becker | Deutschland, Frankreich, Senegal – Porträt der „Mutter des afrikanischen zeitgenössischen Tanzes“.
  • „Leonora in the Morning Light“ – Buch & Regie: Thor Klein, Lena Vurma | Deutschland, Mexiko, Vereinigtes Königreich, Rumänien – Ein Porträt einer bedeutenden Malerin des Surrealismus.
  • „Stiller“ – Regie: Stefan Haupt | Deutschland, Schweiz – Diese Adaption von Max Frischs Romanklassiker spielt gekonnt mit Identitäten.
  • „Zweitland“ – Buch & Regie: Michael Kofler | Deutschland, Italien, Österreich – Familiendrama trifft Gesellschaftsporträt.

The CineMasters competition is about drama“The Exposure”presented by Thomas Imbach. Inspired by Arthur Schnitzler's “Fräulein Else”, the film offers a futuristic, playful atmosphere and combines contributions from Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

CineRebels and Spotlight competition

The CineRebels category brings two more world premieres:

  • „Show Me the Pain of the World“ – Buch & Regie: Tjaša Kosar, Marc Steck | Deutschland, Slowenien – Ein eindringlicher Dokumentarfilm, der sich mit einer unterschätzten Gesundheitskrise auseinandersetzt.
  • „Uma baleïa pode ser dilacerada como uma escola de samba“ – Regie: Marina Meliande, Felipe M. Bragança | Brasilien – Ein beeindruckendes Film-Experiment, das zwischen Kino und Kunstinstallation schwingt.

Last but not least, the Spotlight competition features two international highlights:

  • „The Last Spy“ – Buch & Regie: Katharina Otto-Bernstein | USA, Deutschland – Ein Dokumentarfilm über ein Leben im Verborgenen.
  • „Máscaras de oxigênio não cairão automaticamente“ – Regie: Marcelo Gomes, Carol Minêm | Brasilien – Ein lebensfroher Blick auf die Anfänge von AIDS in Lateinamerika.

The responsibility for selecting the world premieres lies with the artistic management team, which seeks a balance between high-quality content and a wide range of topics. This not only entertains the audience, but also encourages them to think. All films will be screened again on Audience Sunday, the final day of the festival, giving viewers a second chance to enjoy the special works, such as filmfest-muenchen.de reported.

The Munich Film Festival makes you want to go on cinematic journeys of discovery and promises that there is something for every taste. Whether dramatic portraits, social themes or artistic experiments – these world premieres have it all. One more reason to take time for the festival in June and be surprised by new stories!
