Munich-Prague: New trains from 2031 – Is the direct connection coming?
In the coming years, the train offering between Munich and Prague could improve significantly. From 2031, modern trains will be used on the 440-kilometer route, reports Mercury. Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) emphasizes the importance of this direct connection for Bavarian-Czech train traffic. However, an initial tender for new vehicles that should have been sent to this route failed.
This shows that it is not just the Bavarian side that is interested: the Czech Republic is also planning to further expand the connection. Both countries hope for financial support from the EU in order to overcome the challenges associated with the technical suitability of the trains. These must overcome non-electrified sections and be suitable for three different power systems.
New tender process
The next tender for the new trains is scheduled to start at the end of 2025, with a contract award not expected until mid-2027 at the earliest. The connection is currently operated by the state railway in Bavaria and the Czech state railway. So it remains exciting to see what innovations could come our way.
In addition, a direct connection from Prague to Copenhagen will be set up from May 2026, running via Dresden, Berlin and Hamburg. This could not only promote travel between the capitals, but also increase the tourist attraction of the regions.
A look at Munich
Munich, the third largest city in Germany, has around 1.6 million inhabitants and is within walking distance of numerous sights such as Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche. This charming city not only has a rich history but is also known for its diverse culture. Just think of the world-famous Oktoberfest, which attracts millions of visitors every year and offers fine Bavarian cuisine and a variety of beers.
The Bavarian metropolis is also an important economic center within the EU, where industrial giants such as BMW and Siemens are based. The high quality of life is complemented by the extensive transport network, which efficiently organizes both public and private transport. The people of Munich are passionate about traveling by subway, S-Bahn, tram and bus - and now perhaps soon also on new, modern trains towards Prague!
With these developments, the train connection could not only improve mobility, but also intensify exchanges between the two countries and offer new opportunities for tourism and business.
