Munich: Public transport tickets are more expensive than anywhere in Europe!

Munich, the vibrant metropolis in the heart of Bavaria, not only has a variety of cultural highlights to offer, but also well-developed public transport, which is an indispensable means of transport for many citizens. But red alert: the prices for single-journey tickets here are the highest in all of Europe! As the Evening newspaper According to reports, Munich residents pay a whopping 4.10 euros for a single trip on public transport. For comparison: In Stockholm you have to pay 3.94 euros for the same route and in Hamburg you have to pay 3.90 euros.

A closer look shows that nine of the ten most expensive cities for public transport tickets are in Germany. Even London, the best-known non-German city in the ranking, doesn't have the best tickets at 3.45 euros for a single trip. When it comes to monthly subscriptions, however, the British capital is the undisputed leader with a price of over 200 euros. Munich can do relatively cheaply in this area at 68.40 euros for a monthly subscription, but only ranks 17th in a European comparison.

Prices in comparison

The following table shows the current prices for single tickets and monthly subscriptions in different cities:

City Single trip Monthly subscription
Munich (MVV) €4.10 €68.40
Stockholm (SL) €3.94 €97.97
Hamburg (HHV) €3.90 €78.00
Berlin (BVG) €3.80 €106.50
Frankfurt am Main (VGF/Traffiq/RMV) €3.80 €110.30
Cologne (KVB) €3.70 €102.10

But it's not just the prices for single trips that are currently being discussed, the Germany ticket is also in focus: the costs have risen from 49 euros to 58 euros. This increase is causing dissatisfaction as many citizens, especially from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, find the prices unbearable. The Fraunhofer Institute examined the price increase and found that 52.84 euros is already considered “high”, while 74.92 euros is classified as “too high”. The Stern Foundation compared the Deutschlandticket with other European offers such as the climate ticket in Austria or free public transport in Luxembourg.

Price increases and benefits

As the MVV reports, there was last a price increase of 4.9% on January 1, 2025. This change was attributed to increased labor costs and material prices. The inflation rate of 2.2% in 2024 also played its part.

The picture that emerges is clear: While Munich offers excellent local transport, prices are a serious issue that concerns many citizens. A good hand when buying tickets could soon be more in demand than ever!
