Bollard premiere: Miesbach's market square becomes safer and more relaxed!
In Miesbach, where tradition and modernity go hand in hand, construction work on the market square has now been completed. The new bollard system, which was inaugurated during the hustle and bustle of the Green Market, is intended to provide a noticeable improvement in safety. The new safety standard has been in use since yesterday, regulating access for vehicle traffic during market days from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The city administration has recognized this measure as an answer to the problematic traffic situation on the market square and is now hoping for more order and safety.
The bollards installed in this first phase are mechanically operated and not remote controlled. They can be retracted if necessary, giving emergency vehicles quick and unhindered access in an emergency. This well-thought-out concept has brought the city administration one step closer to increasing safety for pedestrians and market patrons. The costs of the bollard system amount to 128,000 euros. It is important to note that unauthorized interference with the bollard system is a criminal offense and will be punished accordingly in order to prevent abuse of the rules.
A defining part of the market square
The market square in Miesbach, where the bollards now stand guard, is not only characterized by the new security measures. The majestic maypole, which is a reminder of the city's tradition and identity, also sits proudly here. It has been in place since May 1, 2019 and attracts not only locals living out of town, but also visitors from the surrounding area.
Around 24 meters high, the maypole is replaced every four to five years, with the selection being made according to strict criteria. The perfect tree must be beautiful, straight and as free of branches as possible. The felling takes place on December 21st, the shortest day of the year. The tree is erected powerfully and with great skill using modern technology such as the use of a crane. The guild symbols that adorn the tree and were designed by Paul Ernst Rattelmüller in 1968 represent numerous Miesbach stands and revive the tradition of the traditional costume movement in the region.
Tradition and modernity combined
The couple in traditional costumes depicted on the maypole in particular make it a popular photo opportunity for tourists and locals alike. Miesbach is not called the “cradle of the traditional costume movement” for nothing. The market square and its maypole are now not only a place of trade, but also a symbol of gathering and the shared celebration of customs and security.
With the erection of the bollards and the strict regulations during market hours, the city is relying on a future that balances tradition and safety, and so that life can continue to be good on the Miesbach market square in the future.
